CONLINXX To Manage Wiri Inland Port
CONLINXX Limited is a 100% subsidiary company to the Ports of Auckland and manages the Wiri Inland Port in South Auckland.
Ports of Auckland has been operating the 10ha Wiri site as an inland port for six years, using a truck-based shuttle service to link it with the Waitemata seaport.
With a new rail exchange connecting the inland port with the seaport from early 2010, Ports of Auckland Managing Director Jens Madsen says it is time to move the operation up a gear.
“One of Ports of Auckland’s key priorities in 2010 is to further drive efficiencies in the supply chain by improving operational performance and profitability of the Wiri Inland Port,” said Mr Madsen.
“This is about unlocking the potential of Wiri Inland Port as a high performing freight hub for the benefit of the whole supply chain.”
Mr Madsen said NZL Group was a logical partner for Ports of Auckland, having established significant experience and capabilities through its existing shuttle contract with the Company, and having previously managed Ports of Auckland’s East Tamaki Inland port.
NZL Group’s CEO Ken Harris says CONLINXX’s primary role is as a facilitator within the trucking and logistics sector.
“CONLINXX’s over-riding objective is to ensure that cargo handled through the inland port is carried in the most efficient way possible, whether by rail or truck,” said Mr Harris.
“As well as managing the inland port CONLINXX will offer truck shuttle services to complement the new rail option.”
Mr Madsen says the prime location of Wiri Inland Port will benefit local importers and exporters.
“Around 70% of the containers that come through the Auckland seaport either originate from or end up within a 10 kilometre radius of the Wiri Inland Port,” said Mr Madsen.
“It makes sense to use it as a staging post and to reduce emissions and environmental impact.”
“Our expectation is that CONLINXX will deliver significant efficiency and operational benefits to its shareholders, through a lower cost structure and a hands-on approach.”
“For Ports of Auckland, this is an important step forward as we develop our product portfolio beyond the traditional stevedoring services we provide.”
Experienced logistics senior executive Reinhold Goeschl has been appointed to lead the CONLINXX management team during the initial stage.
CONLINXX will manage the inland port from 1 February 2010.
CONLINXX Limited is a subsidiary company 70% owned by Ports of Auckland and 30% owned by NZL Group, a leading New Zealand-owned cargo handling and logistics service provider.
